You might be an autism parent if ……

Something big is happening on twitter at the moment.  It is the hashtag #youmightbeanautismparentif……

If you are unfamiliar with twitter, a hashtag before a word or words denotes tweets that have been made under a particular topic. In this case the topic is: you might be an autism parent if…you then fill in the blank.

It was started by an American special needs blogger and is now starting to catch on over here in the UK.  Some of the tweets are amusing, others are inspiring and thought provoking, even heartbreaking, but whatever the tweet there is bound to be something that all parents of autistic children will identify with.

If you are a parent of autistic children and are on twitter then please take a look at this hashtag.  If you are not on twitter then I would encourage you to check it out as there is a growing special needs community online which is supportive and friendly.  There are so many people to interact with who are all experiencing similar challenges and joys as us.  No matter how much we love our children it is always reassuring to know we are not alone.

Here are some of my tweets on the topic and I will continue to add more of mine as I make them.

#youmightbeanautismparentif your child loves the self pay checkouts in the supermarkets.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you’ve forgotten what a holiday is like.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you follow special Saturday.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you stay at home during the Christmas period.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you find yourself explaining autism and aspergers to professionals.

#youmightbeanautismparentif your child continually complains they are bored #aspergers.

#youmightbeanautismparentif your child is shocked when they need the toilet.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you find your cooking ingredients are made into concoctions and hidden around the house.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you’ve forgotten what its like to wear high heels.

#youmightbeanautismparentif school do not understand why your child struggles with PE and thinks you are a neurotic parent (when you mention your child’s difficulties).  (Forgot to add the words in brackets to my original tweet but have added them here for further understanding.)

#youmightbeanautismparentif your aspergers child talks non stop about the galaxy and the speed of light.

#youmightbeanautismparentif you can’t celebrate your birthday because the excitement will cause a meltdown.

Isn’t it amazing? I don’t really like high heels because I’m clumsy, but I NEVER wear them when I have my son by myself. Or jewelry he may destroy. And explaining autism to professionals? Yeah. Along that vein, I think it is amazing to find all the things that autism parents create==books, therapy items, etc== for our kids that are so much better than the experts make! :)

    Glad you’re enjoy the hashtag.

I’m trying to get a blog post ready for Monday. If anyone wants to share their own blog post, they can link up here!
