Blogging is helping boys to write

Listening to the news this morning, I was very interested to learn how Heathfield Primary School in the north of the country were using blogs as a way to help children to develop their writing.  It is reported that this has had a positive affect particularly on boys who are now becoming more engaged with writing and producing some very lengthy stories.  This is worth noting because boys have historically struggled with writing and reading and have generally underperformed in comparison to girls.  As a result the school is now being used as a role model to other schools in the country.

As two of my children also struggle with writing, I am always interested to hear about creative ways of engaging children like mine.  I also enjoyed reading the childrens’ creativity.  Well done Heathfield!

    >@ helloitsgemma; thanks for popping in. I loved watching Gareth the Orchestra man too (is his surname Malone?).

@ Crystal Jigsaw – thankyou for commenting. It is really interesting to hear how writing a blog is helping your daughter with her writing (I'll take a peep when I have a moment). It'll also be interesting to see if blogging takes off in schools.

    >My daughter, Amy, is eleven and autistic. She has a blog of her own, been though I obviously man it.

They use the computers at school but I'm not sure they write a blog. However, Amy loves having her own blog, it's very encouraging and helps her write.

    >what a great idea. As a mum to a boy I am very interested in the whole of issue of boys and literacy. I watched the Gareth (the Orchestra man – name escapes me) and his School for boys programme last year with interest. What a great idea.

    >@ Fiona – will pop along to your blog when I have a moment.

@ Tattie, thanks for popping in. It'll be interesting to see if other schools follow suit.

    >As a mother of boys anything that gets them writing – what a brilliant idea!

    >Think I might give that a try with the 10 year old. One of the ladies I follow, Crystal Jigsaw (I have a link to her blog on mine) has a blog for her autistic daughter and I know it gives her a great deal of pleasure.
